Cavendish East, Prince Edward Island
A FAVOURITE PLACE OF SUNSETS AND MEETS & GREETS
by Julie V. Watson ![]() Choosing my favourite place on Prince Edward Island is a rather daunting task. As a walker and explorer I have found many beautiful spots - hidden treasures. I’ve experienced many special moments, enjoyed many great meals. So what to choose as that special place? Should it be walking on the reef at North Cape? - I love the sea air, the birds, the seals and the feeling of being at one with nature while in the presence of the new technology that brings us power generated by the wind. Should it be the walking trail at Beachgrove in Charlottetown, where the wild flowers are prolific and meeting and greeting fellow dog owners part of the routine? When I asked my husband, he responded, "other than golf courses?" After some deliberation we decided, "Northport with its beautiful scenery, lack of hustle and bustle. A true fishing community where folks are always friendly. You can watch the boats go in and out, picnic by the lighthouse. It is out of the mainstream, yet there is lots to see and do in the surrounding area." But his golf course comment did get me thinking. I’m no golfer. I just whack the ball around until they won’t let me count my score anymore. But I do love driving the golf cart around Rustico Resort Golf Club, especially in the fall. The scenery, the fresh air and the fun of chasing a little white ball make it a favourite.
But back to topic. What am I going to chose as my favourite place?
A few years ago the PEI National Park would have won hands down, but now as a dog owner I am not welcome, and cost of admittance keeps us out most of the summer anyway. So, today a visit to my favourite place is a rare treat, but perhaps enjoyed even more because of that. Entering the Park from Cavendish (at the traffic light entrance) we turn left at the T intersection and go into the parking lot known East Beach - because it is east of the main Cavendish Beach. Here the cliffs are sculpted by sea and wind and a boardwalk and lookout offer a great view of the dunes and beach. The Marco Polo wrecked just off shore. Watching the sea birds fish for dinner and the fishing boats return to shore can keep one seated for hours. There aren’t enough benches or picnic tables by the way, so a blanket is in order. Paddlers, sand castle builders, and sea shell seekers can easily access the beach. What draws me is the people. It has become a favourite stop for tour buses and visitors from all over the world. Many come, as I do, to watch the sun set. I liken it to gatherings at Key West in Florida. Talking, enjoying folk’s tales of travelling adventures, answering questions about our Island, generally enjoying the moment, is a favourite thing. ![]() One hour in time made this a favourite. A few years ago my son and his new bride donned their wedding finery a second time and we three went out to take some special photographs. They now reside in Vancouver for most of the year and wanted to capture memories at some of their favourite places. This was one. John, the photographer, sat Chrissy on the sculpted sandstone, posed her, then set up his camera on a tripod. My job was to guard the camera and push the button when told. He joined Chrissy in the shot and signalled me to take several pictures. I did, but when I finished they didn’t get up. I was afraid to move because the camera was very close to the edge of the cliff. When I asked John what was wrong, why he wasn’t coming to rescue it and me, he said look behind you. I carefully turned my head and there they were, two tour bus loads of Japanese tourists, happily snapping away, delighted to add a romantic couple to their PEI albums. They laughed, and talked. They made a huge fuss over Tipsy, our mini-Schnauzer. They took pictures of me taking pictures of them. Two more groups followed, one from Germany and another from England, and many other vacationers. We had such a grand time that this place, and that memory, have become favourites. Happily I can revisit any time. Winter, summer, spring or fall, Cavendish East always gives me pleasure |
